So the punishment isn't so shocking if Medusa was a priestess of Athena and broke her vows to willingly go with Poseidon. But I find it unlikely that Athena would punish a victim: that version seems to come out of the Roman cultural values of virginity (these were the same people who were known to bury Vestal Virgins alive if said virgin was found to be NOT virginal after all. And the punishment didn't distinguish between force or willing loss of virginity.)

Of course, there's a theory out there that linguistically "virgin" as it's meant for Artemis and Athena meant UNMARRIED (and therefore not owned by a male, as wives were property of their husbands in ancient Greece, even in the myths), not necessarily that they didn't have sex. But I suppose that's a different post (with a whole slew of other research to do). I mean that in a great way - I knew bits and pieces of both versions of the myth and had mashed them up in my head.

The rape victim stuff, especially today, is very disturbing. Athena is a bad, troubled woman, or rather the people who wrote the myths were. I always thought she was wise and rational with my limited Greek mythology knowledge. Hm. That doesn't sit well with me.

This post was very educational :) I enjoyed it. The more you know...N/Ahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03820833129046528089noreply@blogger.com
